New Delhi capital city of country India is a major transport hub for northern India. The colorful city with ancient fortress, majestic buildings and modern tall skyscrapers and well planned townships is a varied mixture of lifestyles, traditions, and cultures.
The beauty and dynamism of city which is fusion of past and present has diverse cultural elements absorbed into daily life.
The history of Delhi begins with the creation of Indraprastha by Pandavas. New Delhi is located on south of old city which was constructed by mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The 20th century leading architect Edwin Lutyens planned the city and laid out central administrative areas of city. The heart of city Rashtrapati Bhawan is at Raisina Hill and Rajpath is stretch from Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate.
New Delhi was a part of Aravalli but now only Delhi ridge are left. City falls under seismic zone-IV and lies on west of Yamuna River. City is governed by its own municipal government called New Delhi municipal council and is administrated by Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Delhi hosts hot and dusty summer from May to June with loo stroms. The cool sunny November to March months are pleasant. Most exuberant festivals celebrated in city are Holi, Diwali, Eid, Dusherra and Durga Puja.
Delhi homes around population of 321,883 and is spread over 42.7 square kilometers. The local government of New Delhi has made arrangements to meet transportation requirements of people. DTC buses, private buses, railways, metro rail, autos, taxis, rickshaws and airlines operate in city. City is main a hub for international tourists with two airports. Indira Gandhi international airport is international airport while a new international project is coming up at Noida, city adjacent to New Delhi. The domestic airport of city handles flights from almost every city of India. New Delhi has three main railway stations New Delhi Railway Station, Nizamuddin Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway Station.
City has diversified culture with national events as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti which are celebrated with great zeal in New Delhi. Religious festivals as Diwali, Durga Puja, Holi, Lohri, Shivratri, Eid, Buddha Jayanti, Christmas showcase unity in diversity. A number of events as Qutub Festival, kite flying festival, Mango festival, Vasnat Panchami and many other are held every year.
Delhi is a kind of place which offers every kind of entertainment to its residents and visitors. A number of cinemas, discs, pubs and eat out joints at Saket, Priya, Connaught Circus and other places in city are a hot spot for youngsters. Theatres as Kala Academy and Sri Fort Auditorium are located at Mandi House in city which hosts famous plays. Shopping spree at Delhi’s hottest markets Connaught Circus, Greater Kailash, South Extension, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and many shopping malls is an ideal way to spend day.
New Delhi also houses National Rail Museum, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Humayun’s Tomb, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, Nehru Museum, Doll Museum, Craft Museum, Old Fort, Safdurjung Fort, Red Fort, Birla Mandir, Isckon Temple, Bangla Sahib Gurdawara, Akshardham Temple, catholic Cathedral, Mughal Garden, Rose Garden, Lodhi garden, Zoo and many other are landmarks of the city.
